HINCKLEY, Ohio (9/23/2013) --
Senior Christina Thorne was just one shot off the lead and senior Lindsey Lammers made a charge up the leaderboard as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team claimed fourth at the Cleveland State Invitational. The two-day event was held at the Par 73, 5,860-yard Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley, Ohio.

"We played well except for a hole or two yesterday and today, we just didn't close it out," said head coach Terri Anthony-Ryan. "We were about eight over on the last few holes and when you take that away, we were right there. We just need to close better, but we are fine and we will improve."

Detroit played better on Tuesday posting a 312 for an overall score of 630 (318-312), just six shots out of third.

Thorne came into the final round just two shots off the lead and was able to make one stroke up tallying a 1-over 74 to tie for second with a 150 (76-74). It was the fifth career runner-up finish for Thorne.

Lammers took three shots off her first round score as she also carded a 1-over 74 earning fifth with a 151 (77-74) total. The fifth-place effort was her 18 career top-10 mark.

"Christina was her usual self and could have been tied for first, but she had a late bogey," said Coach Ryan. "Lindsey improved from yesterday and made a run too."

Junior Olivia Richards shot an 80 to share 22nd with a 161 (81-80), while junior Jessica Mallender tied for 33rd with a 171 (84-87). Freshman Sarah Thompson had the biggest improvement from day one as the rookie lowered her opening 88 down to an 84 to place 35th with a 172 (88-84).

"I was very happy to see Sarah come back and play better than she did yesterday," said Coach Ryan. "Overall, we will get better as a team as we are still breaking in two new starters."

The Titans will have a few weeks of practice before their next event as they go back into Ohio for Toledo's Rocket Classic from Oct. 14-15, held at the Catawba Island Golf Club.
