KETTERING, Ohio (10/21/2014) --The University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team shot a season low to end the fall campaign as the Titans concluded play at the Dayton Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the Par 70, 5,872-yard NCR North Course in Kettering, Ohio.
Â
Detroit totaled a 622(309-313) for fourth place, just four strokes out of a top-three finish. The 622 is also tied for the 11th best 36-hole tournament in school history.
Â
"We were right there and if we putted better, we would have had a chance to win," said head coach Teri Anthony-Ryan. "We only play four tournaments in the fall as I like to do more in the spring, but I was happy with the way we finished up."
Â
Sophomore
Sarah Thompson posted her fourth career top-10 effort as she carded a career-best 149 (74-75), which included a career round of 74 yesterday and a 75 to end today. She led the Titans and was tied for fifth in the event with 21 pars to go with three birdies. Thompson was also tied for fourth in Par 4 (+6, 4.25) and Par 5 (E, 5.00) scoring average.
Â
"Sarah could have been lower, but she just missed a few putts," said Coach Ryan. "She played great this fall and I am looking for her to continue strong in the spring."
Â
Senior
Olivia Richards improved her first-round score by six strokes to tie for 13th with a 156 (81-75). Richards had a tough opening nine in the first round, but was able to put together a 38 on the back nine yesterday to go with her 75 on the final 18. She recorded 18 pars en route to her 24th career top-20 finish.
Â
"She is one of the leaders of this team and is second in school history in career average for a reason," said coach Ryan. "She knows how to just go out there and grind it out."
Â
Senior
Jessica Mallender was just outside the top 20 and also just missed tying her career low by one shot in placing 21st with a 157 (78-79). She also led Detroit with five birdies in the event.
Â
"Jess struggled at the start of the fall, but she has come back strong in the last two events and that is what we need from her," added coach Ryan.
Â
Sophomore
Alexandra LeBlanc shared 34th with a 160 (76-84), while sophomore
Brooke Sharpe tallied a 172 (87-85) tying for 74th. Senior
Rebecca Mallender rounded out the Titans with a 179 (88-91) for 83rd.
Â
The event ends the fall campaign for the defending Horizon League champions as they will now get ready for the spring season. A complete schedule will be available in the near future.
