HATTIESBURG, Miss. (2/22/14) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team split its two games on Saturday at Southern Miss as the Titans won the first game 4-3, before dropping the nightcap 11-0 to the Golden Eagles at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.

Kat Hoffman pitched five strong innings and
Christa McGahuey hit a two run homer to help lift the Titans past Southern Miss (3-10) in the first game of a double-header.
Detroit (2-6) struck first in the top of the first inning after Hoffman reached on a throwing error and McGahuey homered to center field to put the Titans up 2-0. Hoffman then kept the Golden Eagles scoreless until two crossed the plate in the bottom of the third inning to tie score 2-2. But the score didn't stay tied for to long as Hoffman and
Katy Severson both drove in a run run in the top of the fifth inning to put the Titans back up 4-2.
Southern Miss would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but that was it as
Julia Maksym came on in relief to put the Golden Eagles down in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Hoffman (2-3) pitched 5.1 innings allowing one earned run while striking out two for her second win of the young season. Maksym threw 1.2 innings of no-hit ball in relief with one strikeout and three walks.
Samantha Robles pitched for Southern Miss and went seven innings giving up five hits, four runs – two earned – while striking out three.
In the nightcap, Southern Miss scored at least one run in each of the first four innings and Danielle Block pitched five no-hit innings, while striking out three for the win.
Detroit will conclude its trip to Hattiesburg on Sunday when it concludes its four-game series with Southern Miss at 11 a.m. (ET) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
