HATTIESBURG, Miss. (2/23/14) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final game of the weekend against Southern Miss, 8-0, on Sunday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Detroit (2-7) finished its weekend in Hattiesburg 1-3 and will be back in action on Thursday when Titans begin the Louisville Slugger Classic in Tempe, Arizona.
Southern Miss (4-10) came out swinging scoring three runs in both the first and second inning to build an early 6-0 lead. The Titans wanted to get back into the game in the third inning as
Kat Hoffman stole second with two outs to get in scoring position, before
Katy Severson lined out to the shortstop to end the threat.
Detroit then held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the third inning, but couldn't score any runs of its own as Shelbee Rodgers kept the Titans hitless for all five innings that she pitched recording nine strikeouts.
Southern Miss would add one more run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to end the game.
Lauren Weldy started in the circle for Detroit and went 4.1 innings in the loss.
Detroit's first game of the Louisville Slugger Classic will be on Thursday against the host school No. 4 Arizona State. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium with live video and stats provided on the ASU website www.sundevils.com.
