Softball Drops First Game of Music City Classic to Miami

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (2/7/14) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its first game of the 2014 season 9-1 to Miami University on Friday, Feb. 7 in the first game of the Music City Classic hosted at Lipscomb University.

Both teams went scoreless for the first three innings of action, before the Redhawks struck first in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single from Allie Larrabee, following a throwing error by the Titans.

Detroit (0-1) responded early in the top of the fifth with a solo homer from sophomore Christa McGahuey - her first collegiate home run - to tie the score 1-1. But the game didn't stay tied for long as Miami (1-0) answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the six to win the season opener for both teams.

Senior Julia Maksym started the game for Detroit and pitched three scoreless innings before giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth. She finished with one strikeout and one walk with five earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched, while Paige Myers started for Miami and finished with nine strikeouts, one walk and one earned run in 5.0 innings.

Detroit will continue competition in the Music City Classic on Saturday when it faces one of the host schools in Belmont at 10 a.m. (ET), before playing former Horizon League foe Butler at 3 p.m. (ET). Both games will be played at E.S. Rose Park on the campus of Belmont University.
