CHICAGO (3/20/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team almost pulled one out against a Big Ten opponent, but Wisconsin's seventh-inning rally spoiled the Titans' upset bid as the Badgers took both games of a doubleheader in Chicago on Thursday.

The teams played at the Ballpark at Rosemont, the home of the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF).

For the Titans (2-18), it was their first action since March 8 at New Mexico as the red, white and blue saw its series with Morehead State cancelled yesterday, this weekend's action against Green Bay postponed and next Wednesday's doubleheader with Central Michigan called off.

Wisconsin (14-10) took game one, 8-0, and then scored two runs in the last inning in the nightcap to edge UDM, 3-2.

Junior Kat Hoffman pitched a gem in the second game as she struck out a career-high five batters and scattered just seven hits, while sophomore Christa McGahuey provided some fireworks with a two-run home run in the sixth.

Hoffman did not allow a hit through three innings and just two heading into the sixth when Wisconsin was able to put together a small rally and score a run to make it 2-1. Even in that inning, she was able to keep Detroit in front by stranding runners on second and third.

In the seventh, senior Karen McCarty led off the frame with a double and was on third with one out, but Detroit could not get her to cross the plate.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wisconsin had a runner on first and two outs when the Badgers stole the game with a single and then a two-run double down the left field line.

In game one, Detroit battled hard, but Wisconsin was able to earn the 8-0 win as the Titans had just two walks in the five innings before the Badgers put the game away.

At the moment, the next game for Detroit will be next weekend, March 29-30, as the Titans hope to open Horizon League play at Oakland.
