Nelkie Claims 10 First Place Points in 10000 Meter Race for Titans on Day One

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (5/2/2014) -- The 10000 meter distance race, the multi-event athlete competitions and select throwing events kicked off the first day of the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Youngstown, Ohio for the University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's outdoor track and field teams and it was Martin Nelkie and the UDM men's distance runners who helped the Titans earn 22 total points in the 10k race.
 
Detroit claimed four of the top six scoring positions including first place in the 10000m race. Nelkie technically was second timing in at 31:33.34 finishing behind Wright State's Dan Shafer however the Wright State men's team was competing as a non-varsity participant vaulting Nelkie's run into first place and giving the 10 first place points to Detroit. Nelkie was not the only Titan to score in the long distance event as Ryan Leahy was fourth and brought in six points clocking in at 31:59.26, Derek Gielarowski (32:20.00) was fifth and added four points and Colin Creagh (32:25.91) was sixth and added another point to Detroit's total.
 
The UDM women's team also brought in six points as Allyson Koglin was third in the discus throw. Koglin set a new personal record with the seventh-best Titan mark of all-time with a throw of 41.94m/137-07.
 
The multi-events also began on the first day and the Titans had three women competing in the heptathlon.
 
Hana Hunt had a season-best of 1.56m in the high jump coming in first in the heptathlon field in that event. She then added personal records in both the shot put (9.24m) and 200m (26.19). She finished with 2670 points on the first day and is currently in third place, directly ahead of teammate Aisha Potts-Tyre. Potts-Tyre has 2632 after day one and ran 15.33 for a new personal record in the 100 meter hurdles and was second in the shot put as well with a mark of 10.12m/33-2.50. Bri Soule is also competing in the multi-event and sits in sixth place with 2504 points after placing third in the shot put with a mark of 9.75m/32-0.
 
The Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships will continue on Saturday and Sunday in Youngstown State. A live video feed will begin at 2:55 p.m. ET on Saturday and then at 11:55 a.m. ET on Sunday.
