Christa McGahuey hit her 10th home run of the season for the University of Detroit Mercy softball team, but Youngstown State hit six on Saturday to take the first two games of the weekend series. The Penguins won the first game 8-2, before taking the nightcap 4-2 at Buysse Ballpark.
Detroit (7-41, 3-15) honored its seven seniors
Anna Bondy,
Sara Cupp,
Alyssa Gietl,
Hannah Klenk,
Julia Maksym,
Karyn McCarty, and
Katelyn Steffel along with its athletic trainer
Sean Clark in between the two games.
In the first game, the Titans scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles from Steffel and McCarty. But Youngstown State (28-22, 10-8) responded with a two runs in the second inning on a two-run homer from Haley Knight to tie the score 2-2.
The Penguins than added on two more runs in the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs from Maria Lacatena and Sarah Dowd to take 4-2 lead, before extending their lead with a pair of two-run homers in the fifth and sixth inning to make the final 8-2.
Casey Crozier started for Youngstown State in the circle and pitched six innings striking out seven to claim her 17th win of the season.
In the nightcap, Youngstown State scored one run on a two out single from Sarah Ingalls in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. Before Maksym pitched four scoreless innings to keep it a one run game as both teams entered the sixth inning.
In the top half of the sixth the Penguins scored three runs, including a two-run homer from Ingalls, to build a 4-0 lead. The Titans then answered back with a two-run homer of its own as McGahuey connected for her team-leading 10th of the season, but that would be as close as the score would get as the Penguins were able to hold on for the win.
Maksym pitched a complete game scattering nine hits over seven innings with four earned runs and one strikeout.
The Titans will concluded their 2014 season on Sunday with game three of the weekend series against Youngstown State. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at Buysse Ballpark.
