Full Results (HTML)SOUTH BEND, Ind. (12/4/15) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team began the 2016 indoor season with a bang at the Blue and Gold Invite on the campus of the University of Notre Dame Friday night.
Along competitors from Notre Dame, DePaul, Marquette, Northern Illinois and Bethel University, Detroit shined in its first match of the season. The Titans finished with six top-two places and even saw a record fall.
"Great start," said head coach
Guy Murray '89. "We had veterans picking up where they left off and lots of potential shown by the rookies."
Ilia Panev blazed through the preliminary round of the 60-meter hurdles with a pace of 8.47 to head to the finals with the fastest time, and improved his pace to 8.37 to take first in the event. No other hurdler matched either of Panev's marks.
Khalil Parris led the 600-meter run until the final strides before finishing second, while setting a Detroit track and field record of 1:19.63. The mark tops the previous record set by Jack Szczepaniuk in 2000 with a time of 1:20.39.
"Khalil had a great day," said Murray. "UDM records falling this early in the season is a great sign for things to come."
The Titans dominated the one-mile run, with
Joshua Carolin and
Colin Hooker finishing first and second, respectively. Carolin led the pack with a blazing time of 4:28.50, followed by Hooker, who set a personal record with a 4:29.91 pace.
Colton Wirgau finished sixth in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:24.54, followed by
Andrew Heitzhaus in seventh and
Nathaniel Nunez in ninth.
In the weight throw, junior
Colin Cashner finished third with a toss of 17.75 meters, while
Jake Millyard came in ninth and
Nick Scalzi finished 11
th.
Scazli finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 14.18 meters, followed by Millyard in 11
th.
Freshman
Jarod Hoekstra debuted in the long jump and finished in fifth with a jump of 5.27 meters.
Sophomore
Zach Arnold paced Detroit in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 10
th with a 23.10 mark. Arnold edged Panev, who finished in 11
th just 0.07 seconds behind his pace. Espinosa followed in 13
th and Harmon finished 14
th in the event.
In the 400-meter dash,
Carlton Sims led the Titans with a 49.70 time, which was good for seventh in the field.
Anton Webster followed Sims with a 50.38 mark, the 10
th quickest time in the event. Arnold finished the event in 12
th, followed by junior
Joe Harmon in 17
th.
In the 60-meter dash, freshman
Christian Espinosa began his collegiate career with a 7.21 mark and 10
th-place finish.
The combination of Sims, Webster, Panev and Parris broke the December record for Detroit in the 4x400 meter relay, finishing in second with a sub-3:20 mark of 3:18.81.
Also in the 4x400 meter relay, Harmon, Heitzhaus, Wirgau and Whittling finished in seventh and Espinosa, Nunez, Hoekstra and Sand finished in 10
th.
UP NEXTThe Titans will take a brief break over the holiday season and continue performance training until their next match Jan. 15 at the Bob Eubanks Open from Grand Valley State University.
