Allison Garner and
Aisha Potts-Tyre each earned individual victories Saturday to highlight action for the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team at the Saginaw Valley State University Jet's Pizza Invitational.
The inaugural meet on a 300-meter track was individually-based. Team results weren't recorded. Other teams in competition were Oakland, Aquinas, Alma, Davenport, Macomb CC, Northwood, Wayne State, Ferris State and the host Cardinals.
Garner out-ran the field in the 60 meter dash for the win. After qualifying with the best time at 7.80, Garner beat a seven-member final with a winning time of 7.72.
Coppola earned her third win of 2014-15, trumphing in her indoor season debut of the 5,000 meter run with a time of 17:45.37. She won the race over 25 other competitors by more than 7 seconds. Senior
Zeinab Baydoun earned a PR in the 5,000 meters, placing ninth with a time of 8:21.43. Freshman
Taylor Smith also recorded a PR in the event, crossing in a time of 18:24.94.
Potts-Tyre won the long jump for the second straight week, easily winning over the field with a leap of 5.48 meters (17' 11.75"), which is a new PR in the event for the junior. Potts-Tyre also competed in five events for the second-straight week, also placing second in the triple jump at 10.95 meters (35' 11.25") and sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.23).
The Titans placed three in the top five in the shot put. Sophomore
Ashley Bayles finished second with a throw of 12.97 meters (42' 6.75"). Senior
Lauren Berlin followed in third place with a time of 12.47 meters (40' 11"), while freshman
Delaney O'Rourke placed fifth with a heave of 11.82 meters (38' 9.5"), a new personal best. Berlin led Detroit in the weight throw, placing fourth with a new PR of 13.85 meters (45' 5.25").
Shannon Marchant led the Titans in the 800 meter run, finishing fourth in 2:15.53. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf placed 12th in a PR time of 2:22.65, while sophomore
Samantha Zakalowski followed just behind with a time of 2:23.36. Fetherolf also had the top Detroit time in the mile run, placing fourth with a time of 5:12.67.
Garner placed third in the 200 meter dash in a time of 25.69. Junior
Alani Letang finished two places back in fifth with a time of 26.16, while freshman
Brogan Holmes was ninth in a time of 26.29. Four Titans placed in the top 12 in the 60 meter dash. Besides Garner winning the event, Holmes placed ninth (8.13), junior
Jessica Doherty finished 10th (8.14) and freshman
Alyson Hamilton was 12th (8.20).
Freshman
Elizabeth Mullen led the Titans in the 400 meter dash, placing sixth in a time of 1:00.11. Letang finished eighth (1:00.55), senior
Hana Hunt placed ninth (1:00.91) and sophomore
Jayona Dent followed in 10th (1:01.02).
Hunt also competed in the high jump for the Titans and reached 1.48 meters (4' 10.25"). Sophomore
Devon Sutton was Detroit's top finisher in the 3,000 meter run, crossing in a time of 10:49.17.
The Titans finished third in the 4x400 meter relay. The quartet of Dent, Mullen, Letang and Marchant finished the race in a time of 4:01.38.
Detroit returns to the track and field competitively next weekend, competing at the two-day Youngstown State Invitational on Feb. 6-7.
