Coppola's Win Highlights Titans at Windsor Team Challenge

WINDSOR, Ont. (2/14/2015) --
University of Detroit Mercy distance runner Louisa Coppola won the 1,000 meter run Saturday to highlight the Titans at the Windsor Team Challenge, held just across the border in Ontario at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor.

The Titans, competing shorthanded due to illness, had several strong performances from those who participated in the meet. The Titans finished sixth overall as a team, earning 24 points. The top six finishers in each event earned points.

Coppola earned the No. 3 time in Titan history in the 1,000 meters, winning the race in a time of 2:57.62. She won the race by nearly seven seconds. It was Coppola's fourth win of the indoor season as she has two in the 3,000 meters and one win in the 5,000 meter run. Freshman Sydnie Fetherolf made it two in the top three for Detroit in the 1,000 meters, placing third with a time of 3:05.40, which gave her the No. 10 time in Titan history. It was Fetherolf's debut in the event. Senior Sara Taylor also scored for Detroit in the event, finishing with a time of 3:10.86 to place fifth.

Freshman Elizabeth Mullen scored for the Titans in the 600 meters, cross in sixth with a time of 1:40.99. The other scorer for UDM was reigning Horizon League Women's Athlete of the Week, Aisha Potts-Tyre, who finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.06 meters (36' 3.5").

The Titans placed second in the 4x800 meter relay. The quartet of Fetherolf, Coppola, Mullen and Taylor had a time of 9:52.53. Detroit placed seventh in the 4x200 meter relay, as the team of Allison Garner, Brogan Holmes, Jessica Doherty and Alani Letang finished in 1:46.01, which was the seventh-best time in UDM history.

Letang led the Titans in the 300 meter dash, placing 11th with the fourth-best time (41.40) in Titan history in the event. Sophomore Jayona Dent followed in 42.70 and Holmes was just behind in 42.91 as the pair placed 20th and 22nd, respectively.

Garner was Detroit's top finisher in the 60 meter dash (7.89) in ninth place. Potts-Tyre paced UDM in the 60 meter hurdles, placing 10th in a time of 9.16. Senior Hana Hunt ran for the Titans in the 600 meters, earning a time of 1:42.43.

Sophomore Ashley Bayles led the Titans in the weight throw with a heave of 13.98 meters. She placed eighth in the shot put, with a best throw at 12.45 meters.

Detroit next competes at the GVSU Tune-Up on Friday, Feb. 20 on the campus of Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.
