YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/7/2015) -- Highlighted by a strong duo in the pentathlon and top finishes in several events, the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field squad competed at the two-day Youngstown State University National Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The invitational was held at the WATTS indoor facility on the campus of Youngstown State.
Detroit placed two in the top three in the 20-competitor pentathlon. Junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre broke the school record in the event in placing second, while senior
Hana Hunt followed in third place for Detroit. Potts-Tyre won three different events in the pentathlon, setting meet and WATTS records in all three. She earned 3,430 points in the pentathlon, surpassing the school record by 293 points.
Potts-Tyre won the 60 meter hurdles in a meet and WATTS record time of 9.12 and broke meet and fieldhouse records with her winning throw of 11.50 meters (37' 8.75") in the shot put. In the fourth event, she again set meet and WATTS records by leaping 5.39 meters (17' 8.25") to win the long jump. Potts-Tyre set new PRs in the high jump, shot put and 800 meter run during the pentathlon. Potts-Tyre also finished fourth in the triple jump (11.15m/36' 7") placed eighth out of 35 competitors in the 60 meter hurdles (9.19) at the two-day meet.
Hunt had a balanced effort in the pentathlon to finish in third place, earning 3,115 points, close to her personal best. Hunt placed sixth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.60), tied Potts-Tyre for eighth in the high jump (1.56 meters) and finished eighth in the shot put (9.67m/31' 8.75"). She closed the pentathlon with a third place effort in the 800 meter run (2:31.21) to jump into third place in the standings. Hunt had PRs in both the hurdles and shot put.
The Titans' 4x400 meter relay team won in a time of 3:54.59, nearly a second ahead of Slippery Rock and almost two seconds better than Youngstown State. The quartet of
Jayona Dent,
Brogan Holmes,
Elizabeth Mullen and
Shannon Marchant earned the win for Detroit.
Junior sprinter
Allison Garner placed second out of 45 competitors in the 60 meter dash, earning a time of 7.77. Garner earned another top-five finish at the invitational by placing fifth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.52.
Shannon Marchant placed second in the 800 meter run (2:17.01), which was her third finish inside the top-five in the 800 meter run this season.
Louisa Coppola finished seventh out of 50 competitors in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:09.54. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf placed sixth in the mile run with a time of 5:13.71.
Two DMR teams finished in the top five at the meet. The Detroit quartet of Coppola,
Alani Letang, Marchant and
Zeinab Baydoun placed third with a time of 12:24.77, the No. 4 time in the event in school history. The Titans' all-freshmen DMR team of
Sydnie Fetherolf,
Brogan Holmes,
Elizabeth Mullen and
Taylor Smith earned a time of 12:33.77, to break the Detroit rookie record by nearly one minute.
Sophomore
Ashley Bayles placed sixth in the shot put (13.04m/49' 9.50") and eighth in the weight throw (14.51m/47'7.25") to lead the Titans in the throwing events. Senior
Lauren Berlin had throws of 12.18 meters (39' 11.5") and 13.89 meters (45' 7") in the shot put and weight throw, respectively. Berlin's throw in the weight throw was a new PR.
Sophomore
Jayona Dent was Detroit's top finisher in the 400 meter dash, earning 12th overall. She had a time of 59.53. Sophomore
Samantha Zakalowski placed 17th in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:23.27. Zakalowski had a time of 2:25.50 in the 800 meter run, while Mullen followed with a time of 2:28.08 in the event.
Junior sprinter
Jessica Doherty placed 20th in the 60 meter dash (8.14). Freshmen
Alyson Hamilton (8.20) and Holmes (8.33) also competed in the event. Holmes set an indoor PR in the 200 meter dash, winning her heat with a time of 26.04 and tying for 10th place overall out of 51 sprinters. Doherty (26.39) and Hamilton (26.75) and sophomore
Natalie Peterson (27.60) all followed in the 200 meters. Peterson also placed 18th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.64.
Smith set a PR in the 3,000 meter run, earning a time of 10:34.79, which was good for 14th place. Also in the 3,000 meters, Baydoun had a time of 10:43.28, sophomore
Devon Sutton crossed in 11:05.92 and freshman
Jenny Ponkowski earned a time of 11:10.49.
Sutton and Ponkowski also ran inside the top 20 in the 5,000 meter run, earning times of 18:48.01 and 18:57.75, respectively.
The Titans return to the track and field next weekend, competing at the Windsor Team Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14.
