DETROIT (4/11/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team competed at three different meets on Saturday -- two of them inside the state of Michigan. The majority of the squad returned to Oakland University for the Golden Grizzly Duals in Rochester, while the throwers competed at the Northwood Open in Midland, Mich. and several runners competed at the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University.
Five Titans ran at the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday. Freshman
Taylor Smith and senior
Zeinab Baydoun each set PRs in the 5,000 meter run in placing eighth and 13th, respectively, out of 60 competitors. Smith had the No. 7 time in school history in the event at 18:02.96, while Baydoun finished in 18:11.40.
Graduate student
Louisa Coppola finished 19th in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:38.47. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf also competed in the 1,500 meters unseeded event and finished in the top half of competitors with a time of 4:55.73. Senior
Sara Taylor ran in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and finished with a time of 11:43.07.
Sophomore
Ashley Bayles led the throwers at the Northwood Open, finishing second in the discus and third in the shot put and earning two PRs on the day. She had a toss of 12.09 meters (39' 8") in the shot put and a career-best 44.41 meters (145' 8") in the discus. Bayles was seventh in the hammer with a PR of 43.61 meters (143' 1").
Senior
Lauren Berlin placed fourth in the hammer (45.89m/150' 7") and freshman
Delaney O'Rourke set a PR in the hammer throw at 37.32 meters (122' 5") to place 10th in the event for Detroit.
The women's squad finished 3-2 in the head-to-head dual scoring format at the Golden Grizzly Duals. The Titans earned victories over Valparaiso, IPFW and Siena Heights.
Detroit had three runners finish make the finals and place in the top eight in the 100 meter dash at Oakland. Junior
Allison Garner was fourth in 12.35 after running a 12.23 in the preliminaries, freshman
Brogan Holmes was seventh with a time of 12.99 after a 12.59 in the prelims and classmate
Alyson Hamilton had a 12.73 in the qualifying round before finishing at 13.15.
Garner placed fourth in the 200 meter dash (25.84) and Holmes was sixth (26.13) for the Titans. Hamilton finished 10th in the event at 27.04.
Junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre finished third in the 100 meter hurdles finals (14.64), while senior teammate
Hana Hunt was eighth (16.35) for Detroit. Hunt finished third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.59), sophomore
Samantha Zakalowski placed fifth (1:07.06) and junior
Grace Battista followed in 1:08.16. Potts-Tyre also placed second in the long jump (5.27 meters) and Hunt was fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.50 meters.
In the triple jump, Potts-Tyre and junior
Alexandra Lindig placed third and fourth with jumps of 10.72 meters and 10.29 meters, respectively.
Freshman
Elizabeth Mullen finished in fourth in the 400 meter dash, crossing in 1:00.07. Junior
Haley Morairty ran the 800 meter run for the Titans, finishing in 2:30.39. Sophomore
Devon Sutton was eighth in the 5,000 meter run at 19:18.58, while freshman
Jenny Ponkowski placed 10th at 19:27.00.
