Cashner Breaks Penn Relays Meet Record in Hammer Throw

Hammer Results

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (4/25/2015) --
Senior thrower Colin Cashner continued his onslaught of record books Saturday, breaking the event record in the College Men's Hammer Throw at the prestigious Penn Relays as he was crowned champion over 32 other competitors.

Cashner broke an 18-year-old record in the event with his throw of 65.84 meters (216' 0"). His throw topped the previous mark of 64.82 meters, which was set by Nebraska's Bjorn Pettersen in 1997. Cashner also established a new school record with his throw in the event.

11385Cashner had the top two throws on the day and led from the start at the event, breaking his own school record with his first throw of 64.21 meters. After a foul on his second throw, he broke the event record with his third throw. Just five competitors reached 60 meters on the day with William & Mary's Brian Waterfield coming closest to Cashner with his first throw of 63.81 meters.

Detroit senior Eric Lewis made it two Titans in the top 10 in the hammer Saturday as he finished eighth with a top throw of 59.14 meters (194' 0"), which he established with his first throw of the day.

Cashner has re-wrote the Detroit record books during the outdoor season in the hammer throw. After breaking the Titan Field facility record against Oakland, he broke Lewis' school record in the hammer at the Northwood Open on April 11 and then re-broke his own record last weekend at the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State.

It's the second time since 2010 that a Detroit thrower has won an event at the Penn Relays. Brittany Horne won the hammer throw at the Penn Relays in 2010. Horne won the Championship of America hammer throw with a heave of 56.92m/186-8.

It was a successful weekend for the Titans overall after freshman Ben Kendell broke the 5,000 meter run school record on Friday at Hillsdale and graduate student Louisa Coppola ran the fastest time in the Horizon League this year in the 5,000 meter run at the Drake Relays on Thursday.

Detroit returns to the track and field on Friday for the start of the 2015 Horizon League Outdoor Championships, which will be held through Sunday at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
