Louisa Coppola won the 10,000-meter run title and sophomore
Ashley Bayles won the discus for the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team following the first day of the 2015 Horizon League Outdoor Championships, being held at Oakland University.
Detroit earned 22 points during the first day of the outdoor championships and is just five points out of first place in the team standings. Youngstown State leads the championships with 27 points, while Wright State is third (16), Valparaiso fourth (15) and the host Oakland is fifth with 12 points.
The Titans got off to a great start Friday behind junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre's performance in the heptathlon as she scored 2,977 points to sit in first-place through the first four events.
Potts-Tyre won the shot put with a PR mark of 11.79m/38-8.25 and placed third or better in the other three events. She was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a PR time of 14.34, third in the high jump (1.47m/4-9.75) and third in the 200-meter dash with another PR time of 25.84.
Bayles then won the discus title on her last throw of the day as she land a mark of 42.78m/140-4. Her last throw moved her all the way up to first, from fifth on the final standings to earn 10 points for Detroit.
Coppola then closed the day with by winning the 10,00-meter run title, her collegiate debut in the event, with a time of 37:18.09 to gain 10 points for the Titans. She was 13 seconds faster than the second place finisher, while her teammate freshman
Taylor Smith finished fifth overall with a Titan rookie record time of 38:21.20 to collect two more points.
The 2015 Horizon League Outdoor Championships will continue on Saturday with events slated to being at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are available for purchase each day at the championships. A Day Pass for Saturday and Sunday are $10 for each day. A two-day pass is $15 and a three-day pass is $20. Children five years and younger get in for free and Horizon League students also gain entrance for free with their Student ID.
