Men’s Track and Field Sweeps IPFW Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (1/23/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team recorded a clean sweep at the IPFW Duals from Athletic Center Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne, Ind., Saturday afternoon.
 
The Titans rolled past Butler 72-61, IUPUI 75-31 and 73-69 over Horizon League foe Valparaiso. With the 3-0 mark, Detroit improves to 14-1 all-time at IPFW.
 
All told, Detroit picked up five overall event wins.
 
Detroit finished first and second in the 400m run, with junior Khalil Parris leading the pack at 49.55 and freshman Anton Webster following at 50.80.
 
In the 5,000m run, Ryan Hofsess chased down two quick-start leaders to snag the win with a personal record time of 15:33.
 
The Titans finished first and second in the 60m hurdle prelims, with junior Ilia Panev leading the pack at 8.39. Junior Jacob Whitting finished second with a time of 8.89, while freshman Jarod Hoekstra debuted with a 10.24. Whitting picked up the win in the 60m hurdle finals with an 8.76 mark.
 
Panev picked up the top spot in the long jump, finishing well ahead of the second-best mark with a leap of 6.60m.
 
Sophomore Ben Kendell made it a Detroit Titans three-peat after taking the 3,000m run, defending junior Ryan Leahy's back-to-back wins in 2014-15, while also setting the meet record with a blazing speed of 8:33. Senior Austin Wigent clocked in at 8:46, while Derek Gielarowski finished right behind at 8:47.
 
Whitting also got some Heptathlon work in and set a personal record in the 60m hurdles with an 8.76 mark.
 
Freshman Nick Scalzi finished second in the shot put with a toss of 43'11" (13.42m), while Jake Millyard came in third with a mark of 12.31m. Colin Cashner checked in with a toss of 18.79m in the weight throw, good for second in the event.
 
The quartet of sophomore Zach Arnold, Panev, Webster and Parris took the crown in the 4x400m relay with a blazing pace of 3:24.92.

Arnold finished second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.27.
 
The Titans will enjoy a brief break before returning to action next weekend at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational.
