Women's Fencing Competes at Danosi Open

DETROIT (12/11/2016) -- Five University of Detroit Mercy women's fencers kicked off the 2016-17 season at the annual Istvan Danosi Open at nearby Wayne State University on Sunday.

Several Titans made their debuts during the event -- which was held at the Mort Harris Recreation & Fitness Center.

Three women's fencers competed in the sabre -- with sophomore Erica Tessmer finishing in sixth place, followed by junior Nicole Fitch in seventh and newcomer Savannah Lee in eighth. Tessmer went 3-5 in pool play, while Fitch earned two bout victories. Lee also picked up her first win in pool play.

Kellie Hurst was the lone women's fencer in the foil, placing seventh in her first collegiate action. She earned two pool play triumphs before falling in the direct elimination to the eventual champion, Zuzanna Sobczak on Wayne State.

In the epee, freshman Chanel Lindsay made her debut for the Titans, placing ninth.
