2016 Horizon League Championship Bracket (PDF)
DETROIT (3/6/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming 2016 Horizon League Championship after the conclusion of the regular season wrapped up on Sunday. The championship will be held from Thursday through Sunday, March 10-13 at the Kress Events Center in Green Bay, Wis.
The Titans (15-14 overall) finished the regular season with the fourth-best record in the Horizon League at 11-7. Detroit is set to play No. 9 seed Valparaiso in the first round of the tournament at 1 p.m. Thursday. It's the first game of four in the first day of the HL Championship. Green Bay earned the No. 1 seed as the regular-season champions, while Milwaukee also received a double-bye into the semifinals by finishing No. 2 in the standings.
Detroit defeated the Crusaders twice during the regular season, earning a 72-66 road victory in Valparaiso on Jan. 7 before cruising to an 85-65 triumph over Valpo at home on Feb. 13. The winner of the Detroit-Valparaiso game will take on the winner of No. 5 Northern Kentucky and No. 8 Cleveland State on Friday at 6 p.m. ET in the Horizon League quarterfinals.
All of the tournament games are set for a stream on ESPN3 with the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 13 scheduled to be televised nationally on ESPNU.
Under first-year head coach
Bernard Scott, Detroit is guaranteed its first winning season since 2012-13 and has tallied its most conference victories since the 2011-12 campaign. Detroit is looking for its first tournament victory since 2012-13.
