Last HL Tune-Up Goes Well For Detroit

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (4/16/2016) -- Senior Wil Wittmann and redshirt junior David Thompson were both in the top 10 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended the regular season with a quick tournament at Notre Dame on Saturday.

Detroit recorded a 607 (312-295) at the Par-71, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Club in South Bend, Indiana. The score defeated Jesuit-rival Canisius (611), but was behind former conference adversary Notre Dame (574).

"It was an up and down day," said head coach Luke LaFave '02. "We struggled early as the guys were a little tight after the ride down and no practice round. We have a lot of work to do before the conference championship, but I do feel good with a lot of what I saw today from the guys."

Wittmann started the day slow with a 76 in round one. By the afternoon, the Titan was on fire posting a 2-under 69 for a season-low 145 card, tying for third. The 69 was the second-best round on the day in the field as he was just four shots off the lead.

It was also his seventh round at par or better on the season.

Thompson shared 10th with a season-best 148 (78-70), but he was also at his best in round two firing a 1-under 70, tying his career low for 18 holes.

"Wil and Dave played really well for the last 27 holes of the day," added LaFave.

Junior Kyle Gaines tied for 14th with a 158 (83-75), while senior Josh Shaw totaled a 160 (79-81) for 16th place. Sophomore Eric Macrow rounded out the UDM line-up posting a 162 (79-83) for 17th.

Detroit will now head to the Sunshine State as it will look for its eighth conference title when the Horizon League Championship takes place next weekend, April 22-24, at the Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
