JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (5/27/2016) -- Junior
Khalil Parris (Windsor, Ont. / Sandwich) was the first Titan to compete in a NCAA quarterfinal on Friday, as the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field standout placed 19th in the 400 meter hurdles during the second day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Parris ran in the opening heat of 400 meter hurdles and ran a time of 52.00 on the campus of the University of North Florida. He placed 19th overall out of 24 competitors in the NCAA quarterfinal. The top 12 finishers are set to head to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The top time in the competition was Eric Futch of Florida, who crossed in 49.38. Five hurdlers finished with sub-50 second times, while Parris' school-record time of 51.02 set last year was exactly the 12th-place mark at the quarterfinal.
Parris, the Horizon League champion in the event this season, capped off another strong season and was competing in the NCAA East Preliminary Round for the second-straight year. He became the first Detroit Mercy track and field student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA quarterfinal.
The junior ran a season-best time of 51.30 in the first round of the 400 meter hurdles on Thursday to place 13th overall out of 47 finishers.
Parris and senior thrower
Colin Cashner equaled the top finishes for a Detroit track and field student-athlete at the NCAA Preliminaries as they both finished 13th in their respective events. Cashner, who tossed 65.16 meters in the hammer, was just one spot out of qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
It was the third-straight season that the Titans had two competitors at the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
