DETROIT (1/14/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing squad went 1-4 on Saturday at its home invitational, the 2017 Titan Fencing Invitational from Calihan Hall. Detroit Mercy fenced against the five other women's squads in attendance on Saturday.
Detroit Mercy won its opening matchup, defeating Toledo by a 17-4 margin. The Titans dropped matches against Cleveland State (13-6), Wayne State (21-4), Michigan (25-2) and Michigan State (20-5).
Individually, sophomore
Erica Tessmer led the Titans with six bout victories on the day. She went 6-6 overall in the sabre, which included a 2-1 mark against Michigan State. Freshman
Danielle Spencer added five wins for Detroit Mercy, earning two of them against Cleveland State and two more against MSU.
Also in the sabre, newcomer
Savannah Lee earned two wins for the Titans, while junior
Nicole Fitch added another bout win in the weapon. Amongst foilists, newcomer
Julian Slavsky earned a victory and in the epee against Cleveland State. Freshman
Chanel Lindsay earned a victory in the epee against Michigan for the Titans.
