Women's Fencing Opens Season at 2017 Danosi Open

DETROIT (12/4/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team opened up its 2017-18 season on Sunday, competing in the annual Istvan Danosi Open, held on the campus of nearby Wayne State.

Six women's fencers competed at the individual event for Detroit Mercy. Sophomore Chanel Lindsay in the epee and junior Erica Tessmer in the sabre each placed sixth for the Titans as the top finishers.

Lindsay went 2-2 in pool play competition, won her first bout in the direct elimination bouts before bowing out in the quarterfinals to Sierra Jones of Wayne State. Also in the epee, Alexandria Zimmerman saw her first collegiate action, placing 11th for the Titans.

In the sabre, Tessmer went 2-2 in pools and won her first direct elimination match by a 15-2 margin. She fell in the quarterfinals to third-seeded Alexandra Wasag of Wayne State. Sophomore Savannah Lee finished just behind her teammate in seventh in the sabre, posting a 2-3 mark in pool play action and winning her first DE bout 15-11 before being ousted in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Danielle Spencer and newcomer Andrea Sandoval placed 13th and 14th, respectively for the Titans in the foil.
