COLUMBUS, Ohio (2/27/2017) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team placed 15th on Sunday at the 2017 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, held this season at Ohio State University.
The Titans earned 260 points to place 15th out of 22 teams that competed at French Field House. Detroit Mercy finished 13th in the sabre and foil as weapons.
Detroit Mercy opened the conference championships on Saturday with the individual competition at Ohio State. Six different women's fencers competed in the individual competition.
Sophomore
Erica Tessmer was the top finisher for the Titans individually, placing 23rd out of 53 competitors in the sabre. Tessmer went 4-2 in pool play and was seeded No. 24 for the direct elimination brackets. She won her first bout 15-11 before falling to Wayne State's Despina Tsitakidou in the round of 16, 15-6.
Junior
Nicole Fitch placed 36th overall in the sabre, while freshman
Savannah Lee finished 29th in the weapon. Fitch went 3-2 in pool play and Lee recorded a 3-3 mark before the Detroit Mercy pair went against each other in the opening round of direct elimination. Lee earned a 15-14 win over Fitch before falling against No. 2 seed Sarah Merza of Ohio State in the round of 32.
In the foil, newcomer
Kellie Hurst placed 36th overall out of 50 competitors. Sophomore
Julian Slavsky followed in 39th and freshman
Danielle Spencer was 42nd for the Titans in the foil. Hurst and Slavsky each earned two victories in pool play, while Spencer earned one victory.
In the epee, freshman
Chanel Lindsay went 2-4 in pool play and dropped her first direct elimination bout against Nora Baty from Michigan State, by a 15-7 margin. Lindsay placed 40th overall.
