Horizon League Release
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (3/15/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's track and field teams placed three on the Horizon League's Academic All-League Team, the conference office announced recently.
On the men's side, juniors
Ben Kendell and
Charlie Felton represented the Titans, while sophomore
Kye Dozier was the Titans' lone representative on the women's side.
Kendell had an indoor season to remember after finishing in the top four of all eight of his races. The junior earned the 3,000m crown at the HL Indoor Championships and added a fourth-place finish in the 5,000m. In total, Kendell recorded four wins and three runner-up efforts during the indoor season. He set PRs in the mile, 3k and 5k during the season and remains the Titans' all-time leader in the 3k, 5k and 10k. In the classroom, Kendell boasts a 3.99 cumulative GPA in Detroit Mercy's demanding electrical engineering program.
Felton has enjoyed a strong indoor season as well, with seven top-10s and two PRs. The junior set a PR in the 3,000m at the HL Indoor Championships and helped the Titans' DMR team to a sixth-place finish. Felton was on two first-place relay teams during the winter season. Felton owns a 3.77 cumulative GPA in accounting.
Dozier, the 2016 HL Freshman Runner of the Year, was named to the academic team with a 3.73 GPA in political science. The sophomore had another strong season after earning points for Detroit Mercy in the 400m and on the 4x4 relay team during the HL Indoor Championships. Dozier recorded ten top-10s during the 2016-17 indoor season, four of which came in individual competition events.
The Horizon League announced the Academic All-League Team for both men's and women's indoor track and field with a total of 30 student-athletes being recognized for their success both in competition and in the classroom. Faculty athletics representative and sports information directors from each institution casted their vote by ballot in deciding who would be awarded Academic All-League honors.
