Men’s Golf Honored As A GCAA All-Academic Team

NORMAN, Okla. (7/19/2017) -- For the eighth time in the last nine years, the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team was honored with one of the highest awards in the sport as the Titans earned All-Academic Team accolades from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Detroit Mercy recorded a 3.38 team GPA in 2016-17 to earn the impressive award. In the nine-year history of the GCAA All-Academic Team, the Titans have made the grade eight times with three of those seasons as the President's Special Recognition for having a GPA of 3.5 or better.

In June, the Titans were honored with the Horizon League's Raise Your Sights Award, given annually to the best sport teams academically and is based on combined grade point average (GPA) from the current academic year. The award recognizes the top academic male and female team from each Horizon League institution.

Overall, 187 teams – including 102 from Division I – earned GCAA All-Academic Team status with just two from Horizon League members this past year in Detroit Mercy and Valparaiso. The Titans were also one of just three schools from the state of Michigan to be honored with Eastern Michigan and Michigan State also on the prestigious list.

To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.

The GCAA was established in 1958 and is located in Norman, Oklahoma. The GCAA is a non-profit organization and is the professional association of men's collegiate golf coaches. Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men's golf. There are over 750 members in the GCAA representing all three NCAA divisions as well as NAIA and NJCAA.

The GCAA annually administers collegiate competitions, including the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship and the Palmer Cup. In addition, the GCAA administers the team that represents the United States in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup. Through its CEO and national office staff, the GCAA is also responsible for coordinating several recognition and educational events each year. The GCAA functions as the primary award granting organization for men's collegiate golf and has honored thousands of student-athletes and coaches since its inception.
