Women’s Golf Wraps Up Season Opener

BATAVIA, Ohio (9/12/2017) -- Freshman Alexa Hatz led the way for the Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team completed its first tournament of the 2017-18 season on Tuesday at the NKU Fall Classic.

The 54-hole event was held on the Par 71, 6,053-yard Elks Run Golf Club.

Hatz carded her second 79 of the tournament and tied for 47th with a 247 (79-89-79).

Junior Katelyn Henry posted an 82 in the final round and tallied a career-best 249 (86-81-82) to share 53rd, while junior Erica Heath placed 57th overall with a 250 (81-84-85).

As a team, Detroit Mercy finished 12th totaling a 1002 (329-341-332).

The Titans will have two weeks of training before their next tournament as the red, white and blue take part in the Golden Grizzly Invite from Sept. 25-26 at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course.

Tournament Notes:
  • The Titans had two freshmen (Hatz, Shana Murphy) in the line-up and played three (Elle Greenlee) on the weekend as they were without the services of a few veterans due to injury
  • Along with the two freshmen, redshirt freshman Kendall Payne was making her first career start and Henry just her second
  • The 79 in rounds one and three by Hatz were the lowest in the tournament by a Titan
  • Hatz knocked in her only two birdies in the final round.
  • Henry had two birdies in the tournament and lowered her career mark by eight strokes from the 257 she shot at the Rocket Classic last season
  • Her second-round 81 was also a career low
  • Payne's opening-round 83 was a career-low by 13 shots over the 96 she had at the Golden Grizzly Invitational last year

Coach Terri Anthony-Ryan's Take:
  • "We brought a really young team to this opening weekend, and the thought was for them to get their feet wet and they did just that. They had to deal with the fact it was their first tournament and they have never played 36 holes in a day before, and then today in the final round, it was raining all day and we had a long delay so they went through a lot."
  • "We are dealing with some injuries and we wanted to see what the freshmen can do, and I saw a lot of bright spots out there. Alexa's score should have been even lower, but in the second round, I made her play some shots that we really wouldn't play, but I wanted to see how she reacted to them and she came back today and played well."
  • "I was happy with Kendall and Katelyn and their performances. Kendall hits the ball father than anyone I have had and we are working on her short game. Katelyn just continues to improve and will get better every week."
