DETROIT (12/3/2018) -- University of Detroit Mercy women's fencers
Savannah Lee (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Mattawan) and
Manal Shaito (Dallas, Texas / Plano Academy) both earned medalist honors for the Titans at the annual Istvan Danosi Open, held on Wayne State University's campus in Detroit.
Lee, a junior in sabre, and Shaito, a freshman foilist, each earned bronze medals for the Titans in their respective weapons. Shaito, who was seeded 10th after pool play, battled her way to a third-place finish, while Lee picked up her first medal competing in her third Danosi Open.
"I couldn't be more thrilled for Lee, who really has taken the next step," head coach
Todd Dressell said. "She has worked very hard on improving."
Junior
Danielle Spencer (Royal Oak, Mich.) earned a Top-10 finish in foil, placing ninth for Detroit Mercy.
Alex Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) finished in seventh in epee for the Titans, while newcomers Justine Hickey and
Courtney Tessmer placed sixth and seventh in sabre for Detroit Mercy.

As a team, the next fencing meet for the Titans is their home Detroit Mercy Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 13. The first bouts are set to get underway at 9 a.m. from Calihan Hall.
