SOUTH BEND, Ind. (2/5/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team competed Sunday at the Northwestern Mega-Meet, held this season at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. The Titans went 0-4 on the day against other Division I foes.
The Titans went against the No. 12 team in the country, North Carolina, falling 26-1. Detroit Mercy also dropped match-ups with Fairleigh Dickinson (16-10), Cal Tech (15-10) and Incarnate Word (16-9).
Junior
Erica Tessmer (sabre) led the team with a 4-5 record on the day, earning victories against all four teams. She earned the bout victory against North Carolina. Also in sabre, sophomore
Savannah Lee went 3-6 for the Titans, including a 2-0 mark against Cal Tech.
Sophomore
Aya El-Mokadam recorded two victories in epee for the Titans, while sophomore
Chanel Lindsay and newcomer
Alexandria Zimmerman each posted a victory against Cal Tech in epee. In foil, sophomore
Danielle Spencer and freshman
Andrea Sandoval also nabbed wins for the Titans.

Detroit Mercy is off next weekend, but returns to fencing the following weekend with several members traveling to the USA Fencing Junior Olympics in Memphis, Tenn. The Midwest Fencing Conference Championship follows from Feb. 24-25 in Columbus, Ohio.
