DETROIT (7/16/2018) -- From July 16-27, DetroitTitans.com will release the Top 10 Moments of 2017-18 as voted on by members of the Detroit Mercy athletic staff. Each day, a new moment will be posted on DetroitTitans.com as well as on all of the Titan social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter &
Instagram).
Opening up the top 10 this year was the Titans performance academically. Detroit Mercy student-athletes once again shined in the classroom, sporting a 3.34 GPA collectively with 17 of the 19 programs earning a 3.0 GPA or better across the 2017-18 school year.
Several individuals also shined with men's soccer standout Spiro Pliakos becoming the first Detroit Mercy male student-athlete to receive First Team Academic All-American honors. Senior track and field runner Ben Kendell was named the Co-Spring Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Season and was voted CoSIDA Academic All-District. Men's soccer senior Tyler Moorman received a pair of academic honors as he was named the Fall Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Season as well as Scholar All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches Association.
The Titan men's soccer program received five of the 12 All-Academic Team members in men's soccer, while eight members of women's lacrosse received Commissioner's Medals for sporting a 3.80 GPA or better. Eight members of the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams earned recognition on the Horizon League All-Academic Team, which also tied Milwaukee for the league-best. Softball also tied for the league best with UIC, putting three members on the HL All-Academic Team during the spring season.
All 10 women's athletic programs had GPAs better than 3.25 on the school year and seven of the nine Titan men's programs were above 3.0 GPAs for the 2017-18 school year. Women's golf sported the top GPA with a 3.72 GPA, while men's soccer led all men's squads in the department with a 3.51 GPA this past academic year. Two-hundred seventy (270) Titans -- spirit squads included -- were honored on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for sporting a 3.0 GPA or better.
The Detroit Mercy men's fencing program once again scored a perfect 1,000 on its recent APR and is one of just 23 Division I programs in the state of Michigan to receive the honor for the 2016-17 academic year. The squad is also one of just 85 teams across the country that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year of the 13-year-old program.
