DETROIT (1/13/2019) -- Freshman
Manal Shaito and junior
Danielle Spencer combined for 18 bout victories Sunday and the University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team finished 2-3 overall as the Titans hosted their home invitational from Calihan Hall.
Shaito, in her first year of collegiate fencing, went 10-3 in foil, while Spencer recorded a mark of 8-5 for the red, white and blue. The pair were both undefeated against both Oakland and Michigan State, while Shaito also had a 2-0 mark against Cleveland State and the pair both picked up two victories against Michigan.
As a team, Detroit Mercy secured victories over Cleveland State (14-10) and Oakland (13-12), while falling to Michigan (23-4), Wayne State (18-7) and Michigan State (19-8).
In sabre,
Savannah Lee and
Justine Hickey each picked up two bout victories for the Titans, while
Alex Zimmerman earned three wins in epee for Detroit Mercy.
The Titans return to competition next weekend, fencing in New York -- first at the Army West Point Duals on Saturday and then at the Vassar Duals in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Sunday.
