SOUTH BEND, Ind. (1/26/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team competed Saturday at the DeCicco Duals, hosted by Notre Dame and held at the Castellan Family Fencing Center. The Titans finished 0-4 on the day as a team.
Detroit Mercy was led by freshman
Manal Shaito and junior
Danielle Spencer -- both in foil -- who combined for nine bout victories on the day. Shaito went 6-6 in foil with Spencer also picking up three victories during competition. Both fencers earned wins over top-ranked Notre Dame.
The Titans fell against Florida, 15-12, in the first round and then fell against Lawrence, 22-5. After dropping a 25-2 match against the top-ranked team in the country, Notre Dame, the Titans fell 23-4 to Wagner in the final round of the afternoon.
Savannah Lee and
Alex Zimmerman also picked up triumphs of the red, white and blue at Notre Dame on Saturday.
Detroit Mercy returns to competition next weekend, fencing on Saturday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb. 3 at the Northwestern Mega-Meet from Evanston, Ill.
