YPSILANTI, Mich. (10/5/2021) -- Freshman
Ariel Chang was in the top 10 again and senior
Kendall Payne recorded her second top-20 effort of the season as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team nearly set a school record as Eastern Michigan's Shirley Spork Invitational ended on a rainy Tuesday.
The Titans posted a 315 in the final round and finished seventh with a 928 (314-299-315) scorecard on the par 72, 6,175-yard Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti. The 928 is the second best score in school history behind only the 920 the program carded in winning the 2013 Horizon League Championship. The red, white and blue were also tied for the best mark in the field with a +12, 5.20 average on the par 5's.
Chang tied for ninth overall with a 225 (76-72-77) as her final 18 featured 12 pars. Overall, she led the team and was tied for second in the event with 39 pars and she had the only eagle in the field that she knocked in on her third shot on the par 5, 10th hole in round two. That helped her tie for first in the competition with a -2, 4.83 average on the par 5's.
Payne had the best round of the day with a 4-over 76 to share 15th with a career-best 227 (78-73-76), breaking her old mark by six strokes. She registered three birdies and nine pars in round three and tied for second in the event with 10 total pars.
Senior
Shana Murphy tied for 36th with a 236 (79-75-82), while senior

The Titans will now get ready for their final fall event as they play in the Dayton Flyers Invitational from Oct. 18-19.
