DETROIT (12/2/2021) -- The University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics has once again excelled outside of competition as the Titans received high marks in the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which was released by the NCAA on Thursday afternoon.
Detroit Mercy registered a 90.0 % in the GSR, which gives graduation information about the most recent six-year graduating class of students and student-athletes who entered as freshmen in 2014-15.
"I think the latest numbers show the hard work and effort that is put in by the student-athletes, athletic staff and coaches and all our University educators that help ensure the success and graduation of our Titans," said Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance
Steve Corder '98. "Our number one goal is education and graduation and we are doing a great job at Detroit Mercy."
For the 17th-straight year, Detroit Mercy ranked among the top-five in the state – third overall – in the GSR. It was the fifth-straight year the Titans have reached the 90.0 % mark as it trailed only Michigan's 95.0 % and Michigan State's 92.0 % rate in the state, while tying with Oakland.
The Titans also had five teams tally a perfect 100-percent score as well as four other programs that exceeded the national average.
Detroit Mercy student-athletes in men's and women's golf, men's fencing, women's lacrosse and women's soccer garnered a perfect 100.0 % in the GSR, while softball (95.0%), women's cross country and track and field (92.0 %), men's soccer (88.0%) and men's cross country and track and field (86.0 %) were all above the national mark in their respective sport.
Because the ultimate goal of the college experience is graduation, the NCAA has devoted attention to researching student-athlete graduation rates for more than two decades. The student-athlete graduation rate calculated directly based on IPEDS-GRS (which is the methodology the U.S. Department of Education requires) is the proportion of first-year, full-time student-athletes who entered a school on athletics aid and graduated from that institution within six years.
