Titans' Seventh Inning Rally Comes Up Short at NKU

Murphy records season-high eight strikeouts

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (4/29/22) - Graduate student Liz Murphy posted a season-high eight strikeouts going the distance with 6.0 innings of work in the circle as Detroit Mercy's seventh inning rally came up short with a 3-1 setback at Northern Kentucky on Friday afternoon at Frank Grein Field.

Senior McKenna Tanguay sparked the seventh inning rally with a single to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error. Senior Piper Roth followed with a bunt single which moved Tanguay to third base. Graduate student Leena Mortensen then followed with an RBI single to score Tanguay to get the Titans on the board.

Inning Recap:
• Northern Kentucky (21-26, 10-12 HL) took a 1-0 lead off a solo home run in the first inning
• NKU got two runners on base off a walk and error but Murphy was able to get out of the jam and leave them stranded
Jordyn Chapman snuffed out an attempted sucide squeeze and tagged a run out at the plate keeping the game at 1-0 in the third inning
• Roth recorded Detroit Mercy's (4-33, 4-18 HL) first hit of the game beating out the throw to first base off a bunt
Allison Smith made a nice play at shortstop to end the fourth inning and keep NKU off the board
• Tanguay led off the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. • Roth followed with a bunt single to get runners on first and second base.
• Mortensen drove a RBI single up the middle that deflected off the pitcher scoring Tanguay
• Peru flew out to left field which advanced the runners to second and third base. However, the umpires ruled that Roth left early from second base and was ruled out at third while pinch runner Kara Wolfbauer advanced to second.
• After a Trotman walk, NKU pitcher Lauryn Hicks was able to strike out Chapman to end the game

The Titans and Norse will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 beginning at 1 p.m.
