Spitzer Picks Up First Career Win Leading Detroit Mercy to DoubleHeader Split at NKU

Spitzer posts four strikeouts, Warrington records first career save in Titans game one win

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (4/30/22) - Freshman Chloe Spitzer recorded her first career win posting four strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work while junior Olivia Warrington came in and retired the last two batters to pick up her first career save in Detroit Mercy's 2-1 win in doubleheader action at Northern Kentucky on Saturday at Frank Grein Field. The Titans hit three home runs in the nightcap but fell 6-5 in nine innings for the DH split. 

Senior Liz Paver hit her second home run of the season followed by junior Allison Smith who belted her second career homer in the second inning. Senior McKenna Tanguay went a combined 3-for-9 hitting her team-leading fifth home run of the season with a double, two runs and an RBI. 

Senior Taryn Peru hit 4-for-7 on the day with three RBI and a double. Junior Jordyn Chapman chipped with three hits while senior Piper Roth had two with a run scored. Freshman Keira Morrow made her first career start in game one at designated player, drawing two walks while graduate student Leena Mortensen recorded an RBI single.

Game 1:
• Tanguay posted a double in the first inning for Detroit Mercy's (5-34, 5-19 HL) first hit of the game
• The Titans finally broke through in the sixth inning as Smith drew a walk followed by a bunt single from Roth.
• With two outs, Peru delivered a huge two-run double to score both runners giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.
• Chapman then singled up the middle followed by a walk from Morrow to load the bases but the Titans could not push across a run.
• Northern Kentucky (22-27, 11-13 HL) opened the seventh inning with a pair of doubles off Spitzer to cut the lead in half at 2-1 with one out.
• Warrington entered the game and struck out the next batter for the second out and got the final ground out to secure her first career save and Spitzer's first career win.

Game 2:
• Mortensen gave the Titans an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to score Tanguay
• Paver and Smith each hit solo homers in the second inning moving Detroit Mercy to a 3-0 lead
• Peru delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score Smith for a 4-0 lead
• NKU struck back with one swing of the bat off a three-run home run in the fifth inning cutting the Titan lead to a run at 4-3.
• Tanguay's home run move the Titans ahead by two runs at 5-3 in the sixth inning
• The Norse added an RBI triple in the bottom half of the sixth to pull within a run for the second time at 5-4.
• After a runner reached on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh, NKU got an RBI double to plate an unearned run tying the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
• The Titans got a runner to third base with two outs in the top of the ninth inning couldn't get the run across
• NKU loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and once again an error proved to be costly.
• A ball was hit to the shortstop and not fielded properly which led to a late throw to the plate allowing the unearned game-winning run to score for the 6-5 NKU win.

Detroit Mercy closes out the #HLSB regular season with a home series against Cleveland State starting on Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m.
