DETROIT (8/16/2022) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team continues to finalize its roster for the upcoming season as the Titans have announced that
Gerald Liddell (Cibolo, Texas/Steele) has transferred to the program.
Liddell - a 6-8, 203-pound forward - played last season at Alabama State after starting his collegiate at Texas.
"We believe that this is a very good commit for us," said head coach
Mike Davis. "He was ranked high out of high school and went to Texas and then played last year at Alabama State, where he really started to excel as the season went on. We feel like we have a skilled forward, he can really play all over the court, and for us to get an athletic guy with his ability is big for us."
With the Hornets, he played in 25 games with 19 starts and averaged 10.3 points, a team-high 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists to go with 24 steals and 24 blocks. He shot 43.8 percent overall and 37.0 percent from three, reaching double figures in 13 games and posting five double-doubles. Liddell scored a career-high 22 points with 11 boards against North Carolina Central and netted double-doubles in four of his last five games, including netting 13 points with a career-best 14 rebounds against rival Alabama A&M.
In his three years with Texas, he saw action in 35 games with 10 starts and averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds. His best year was as a sophomore as he played in 15 games with 10 starts until a back injury cut his season short. He was registering 4.1 points and 3.1 assists and started the year with a then career-best 14 points against No. 23 Purdue.
As a prep at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, he was ranked as the No. 41 overall prospect in the nation by 247Sports and No. 47 by ESPN. In his senior year, he tallied 16.5 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game, while leading Steele to a 32-3 overall record and was First-Team All-State.
He is the latest addition to the program that includes Temple transfer
Arashma Parks, Loyola Chicago transfer
Damezi Anderson, Grand Canyon transfer
Jayden Stone, and incoming freshmen
Isaiah Jones,
Sonny Johnson and
Marcus Tankersley. Also, former Titan
Jamail Pink has transferred back to the program.
The Titans are led by four-time All-Horizon League First Team selection and the 2021-22 Horizon League Co-Player of the Year in graduate senior
Antoine Davis. He enters his graduate season with 2,734 career points, tops in school history, second all-time in Horizon League history (180 away from first) and 22nd in NCAA history (266 away from becoming the 11th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 points). He has made 429 career 3-pointers, first in Horizon League history and 12th in NCAA history, while his 3.86, three-point field goals per game is currently fifth all-time in the NCAA record book. Davis is also fourth in NCAA history in consecutive games in double figures with 111 - just four off the all-time NCAA mark.
