SOUTH BEND, Ind.(12/6/2024) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team opened its season at Notre Dame's Blue & Gold Invitational on Friday afternoon and came away with a pair of gold medals.
Freshman
James Wallace had an outstanding debut for the Titans, winning the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.97, and taking runner-up honors in the 60m dash with a time of 6.84 seconds.
Senior
Cody Bartlett won the high jump event with a leap of 1.95m. Fellow senior
Ashwin Philip took home runner-up honors in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:01.19.
Four freshmen finished in the top eight in the 60-meter hurdles.
Trevor Watts led Detroit Mercy with a runner-up finish time of 8.41,
Luke Bracket took fourth in 8.68,
Andrew Drakos placed seventh in 8.99, and
Joey DeRose was eighth with a time of 9.05 seconds.
Senior
Jaden McKenzie placed sixth in the 300m dash with a personal record time of 35.10 seconds, while sophomore
Mike Ferguson took third in the 400m in 51.44 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay event closed things out, with the team of Bracket, DeRose, Philip, and sophomore
Sebastian Cervelli earning fifth in 3:24.93.
UDM will be back in action following the holiday break when they travel to nearby Windsor University for the Can-Am Classic on Jan. 10th-11th.
