YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (2/24/2024) -- Senior
Kayla Smith took gold in the weight and graduate senior
Allison Sherman clocked a school record in the 5,000-meters as the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team started the Horizon League Indoor Championships on Saturday.
With those performances, the Titans stand in fourth place with 15 points.
Smith - who came into the event seeded first with a career-best 17.88 meters for second in school history - jumped to the top with her fourth toss of 17.36m and then sealed the deal the next time throwing 17.37m. She became the first Titan indoor championship winner since 2020 and the first women's weight winner since Titan Hall-Of-Famer Andrea Karpala in 2005.Â
On the season, Smith placed in the top three in the weight in all nine outings.
Meanwhile, Sherman - who etched her name all over the cross-country record book - posted a career-best by 23 seconds, taking fourth in 16:47.58. The time bested another Hall-Of-Famer Kim Hemstreet's 16:48.03 in 2002.Â
The final day of the championships will get underway with the heptathlon events at 9:00 a.m. and fans can watch most of the events on ESPN+ or follow with live results.Â
