YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. (3-16-24) - Sophomores

Trinity Fessler, and
Jenna Holt each recorded two hits as Detroit Mercy kicked off the #HLSB season with an 11-1 and 10-1 doubleheader setback at Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at the YSU Softball Complex.
Freshman
Claire Borg, junior
Jaiden Lara, and sophomore
Elyssa Adams also each recorded a hit.
Game 1 Recap:
• YSU jumped out to an 11-0 lead with six runs in the first inning and 5 in the second.
• With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, Borg reached on an error followed by a walk from Lara. Adams then broke up YSU pitcher Sophie Howell's no-hit bid with a single to load the bases.
• Redshirt Freshman
Olivia Malcolm grounded out to second base scoring Borg putting the Titans on the board
• Holt then lined out to third base to end the game.
Game 2 Recap:
• The Titans bats were more active posting eight overall hits
• Fessler got the first hit of the game in the first but was caught stealing for the last out of the inning.
• YSU added runs in the bottom of the first and second and two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
• Holt, Fessler and Donaugh got hits in the top of the fourth inning. Borg hit a single to plate Fessler. After a wild pitch, UDM had runners at second and third but were left stranded with the Titans trailing 4-1.
• The Penguins took control in the bottom of the fourth inning with six runs to take a commanding 10-1 lead.
• UDM had a chance to get back into the game as Lara led off the fifth with a single.
After two outs, Holt hit another single followed by a walk from Fessler to load the bases. However, YSU relief pitcher Devan Ryan came in and struck out the last batter ending the threat and the game.
Detroit Mercy and YSU play the series finale on St. Patrick's Day Sunday, Mar. 17 at 1 pm.
