Upton Hits First Career Home Run While Davis Belts Two Homers as Titans Drop Doubleheader to PFW

DETROIT (4-20-24) - Freshman Jada Davis hit a pair of home runs with three RBI while a day after securing her first career collegiate hit, redshirt freshman Molly Upton connected on her first career home run with a three-run shot as Detroit Mercy battled but came up short 3-2 in the first leg of a #HLSB doubleheader series to Purdue Fort Wayne and fell 13-5 in the nightcap on Saturday at Buysse Ballpark.

Junior Jordan Kavanagh tossed her seventh complete game with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work in game one. She also went 3-for-5 on the day at the plate.

Junior Amanda Schick, sophomore Trinity Fessler, freshman Claire Borg, and sophomore Jenna Holt each posted two total hits while freshman Alexis Hoff and junior Jaiden Lara had a hit each.

Game 1 Recap:
• Detroit Mercy took a 1-0 lead as Holt scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.
• Kavanagh held PFW scoreless for five innings.
• The Dons finally broke through with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.
• Davis hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth pulling the Titans within a run at 3-2.
• Borg hit a single in the bottom of the seventh but was thrown out on a fielder's choice during the next at-bat by Schick as the Titans couldn't plate the game-tying run.

Game 2 Recap:
• The second game had seven total home runs with five from PFW and two by Detroit Mercy.
• After the Dons took a 1-0 lead with a solo shot in the first, Davis belted a two-run homer for her second long ball of the day, moving UDM ahead 2-1 in the bottom half.
• PFW posted six runs (five unearned) highlighted by a solo homer and a two-run shot in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead.
• In the fourth inning with a 1-1 count on sophomore Elyssa Adams, Head Coach Dan Vitale elected to pinch-hit Upton who then crushed a three-run shot to right field pulling the Titans within two runs at 7-5.
• PFW added two more runs with a pair of RBI singles in the fifth inning to move ahead 9-5.
• UDM had a chance to respond by loading the bases in the bottom half off singles from Kavanagh and Lara and a walk from Hoff. However, the Titans left all three runners stranded.
• The Dons then added four more runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Detroit Mercy will play a makeup doubleheader against Robert Morris on Monday, April 22 at 12 pm and 2 pm.
