Fessler Sparks Seventh Inning Rally as the Titans Secure Win Over Northern Kentucky to Earn Doubleheader Spit

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (4-27-24) - 
Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, sophomore Trinity Fessler came up huge hitting a clutch two-run double to tie the game followed by freshman Alexis Hoff's game-winning RBI single giving Detroit Mercy a dramatic 5-4 nightcap win to earn a #HLSB doubleheader split against Northern Kentucky on Saturday at Ignatius Grein Field. The Norse took game one, 7-1. On the day, Fessler went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two doubles, two walks, and two runs scored while hitting her third home run of the season. 

Freshman Claire Borg closed the door on the Norse picking up her first career win in the circle tossing 1.1 innings in relief of graduate Student Olivia Warrington had a strikeout with only two earned runs in 5.2 innings in the no-decision. Borg also hit 1-for-3 in both games with an RBI in game two.

Sophomore Jenna Holt went a combined 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and a walk.

Junior Jaiden Lara went 1-for-3 in game one while freshman Jada Davis and junior Jordan Kavanagh each had a hit in the nightcap.

Game 2 Recap:
• NKU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single.
• Davis then scored off a wild pitch followed by an RBI single down the left field line from Borg to plate Holt in the third inning for a 2-1 Titan lead.
• NKU got the tying run in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings but Warrington was able to keep them off the board, preserving the 2-1 lead.
• The Norse broke through with three runs on a throwing error, RBI double, and single to take a 4-2 lead. Borg entered the game with a runner on second base but was able to get the last batter out keeping the deficit at two runs.
• Kavanagh had a pinch-hit single to lead off the seventh inning and was pinch-run for by sophomore Elyssa Adams. Holt then walked, putting runners at first and second. Fessler ripped a two-run double to right field tying the game at 4-4. Hoff followed with an RBI single to score Fessler giving the Titans a 5-4 lead.
• Borg then closed out the Norse in the bottom of the seventh to seal the game.

Game 1 Recap:
• Fessler hit a double in the first inning with two outs in the first inning but was left stranded.
• NKU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half and a two-run double.
• Borg and Holt hit singles in the second and third innings respectively but were also left stranded keeping the deficit at two runs.   
• UDM finally broke through as Fessler's solo homer tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning.
• The Norse regained the lead at 3-2 with an RBI groundout in the bottom half. 
• Lara reached on a single in the top of the fifth but was thrown out on a line-out double play to end the inning.
• NKU then moved ahead for good with an RBI single and a backbreaking three-run home run to take a 7-1 lead.
• The Titans for the bases loaded with one out of a walk, hit-by-pitch, and fielder's choice. However, NKU was able to turn a double play to end the inning.

Detroit Mercy returns to Buysse Ballpark for the final #HLSB series of the season against Green Bay beginning on Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m.
