The Detroit Titans women's track and field team opened the 2009 season with a fine performance at the Blue & Gold Invite, held at the University of Notre Dame.
“A good opener for us,” said head coach
Guy Murray. “We did a lot of good things with signs of good potential for the year ahead.”
Two Titans set personal records on the day in senior
Chanteenel McClendon (Maple Heights, OH / Maple Heights) and sophomore
Alena Bower (North Branch, MI / North Branch). McClendon took fifth in the 1000m with a run of 3:06.18, a time that now stands sixth in Titans annals, while Bower finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5'1"/1.55m.
“It was great for Chanteenel and Alena to open with PRs,” added Murray.
Senior
Tiffany James (Westland, MI / Wayne Memorial) had a pair of top five finishes placing second in the 60m in 8.00 and fifth in the 200 with a 26.43. In the other sprint event, sophomore
Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI / Belleville) claimed fifth clocked at 60.43.
Senior
Terricita Thomas (Maple Heights, OH / Maple Heights) earned 11th in 11:06.17, while freshman
Monica Betker (Mecosta, MI / Chippewa Hills) was fifth in her first collegiate pole vault with a mark of 8'6.25"/2.60m.
Sophomore
Chantel Henry (Tecumseh, ON / St. Anne's) showed off her multi capabilities taking second in the high jump (5'1"/1.55m) and fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (10.37). Freshman
Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA / Burrell) made a positive debut in jumps placing fourth in the triple with a leap of 33'4.75"/10.18m and sixth in the long, where she was measured at 15'9.75"/4.82m.
Senior
Brittany Horne's (Okemos, MI / Okemos) toss of 51'8.25"/15.75m gave her second in the weight, while placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 41'5.25"/12.63m.
The Titan 4x400-meter relay, composed of Calhoun, James, junior
Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH / Zanesville) and sophomore
Kirstin Mooney (Stirling ON / St. Theresa Catholic), rounded out the day with a fourth-place tally posting a time of 4:05.68.
“The 4x400m ran our fastest time ever for December, a good sign for another great year of 4x4 running.” noted Murray.
Detroit is back in action next Friday, Dec. 12, when the Titans compete in the Macomb Opener.
