Necajevs Earns Flight A Singles Title As Titans Wrap Up Valpo Fall Classic

Valpo Fall Classic Final Results

Junior Pjotrs Necajevs (Riga, Latvia/Herdera Vidusskola) earned his second-straight flight title on the season with a pair of victories as the Detroit Titans men's tennis team finished play at the Valpo Fall Classic on Saturday.

"It was another strong step in the right direction for this program," said head coach Grant Asher. "There were a lot of teams here from the Horizon League and I think that our guys competed well and finished each match strong."

Necajevs, who defeated two Horizon League foes on day one, downed another two conference opponents on his way to claiming the Flight A singles championship. In the semifinals, Necajevs took out UIC's Sebastian Lystad 6-3, 6-3 and then cruised past Green Bay's Matt Clegg 6-1, 6-1 in the finals. The junior netter has not dropped a set all year and is now 8-0 in singles play.

Freshman Nick Tolomei (Rochester Hills, MI/Adams) took the Flight B consolation bracket with a pair of wins. After going 1-1 on day one, Tolomei rallied to get by Green Bay's Matt Keesey 7-6, 3-6, 10-5 before rolling past Youngstown State's Steve D'Angelo 6-1, 6-4.

"Pjotrs has just been great for us," said Asher. "Nick continues to improve and really battles for every point out there."

Detroit will return to action next week when the Titans compete in the Ball State Invitational on Oct. 3-5 at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center in Muncie, IN.
