Detroit Mercy To Discontinue Men’s & Women’s Tennis At End Of 2019 Season

DETROIT (8/31/2018) -- Following a comprehensive analysis by University of Detroit Mercy's Athletics Department, the University will eliminate men's and women's tennis at the end of the 2018-2019 season. Thus, the University's total sports sponsorship will become 17 from 19 Division I teams.

"This was a very difficult decision," said Robert C. Vowels, Jr., director of Athletics at the University.  "Detroit Mercy will work very hard to provide our student-athletes who are impacted by this decision with the support they need."

Detroit Mercy will give all tennis players the opportunity to contact other schools for the purpose of transfer. The University will also release any national letter of intent signee who wishes to pursue other intercollegiate athletic opportunities. In addition, Detroit Mercy will honor all national letters of intent and scholarships for those students impacted by this difficult decision who wish to continue their studies at the University in accordance with University and Athletics Department policies.

Update: Detroit Mercy announced in early December that men's tennis will not play the 2019 season as most of the student-athletes have transferred to another school. Women's tennis will still compete as a team for a Horizon League championship in 2019.
