Toledo, Ohio (9/29/18) –After opening the tournament on Friday with a strong doubles showing, the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team carried the momentum into Saturday singles rounds to go 5-1 on day two of the Rocket Invite at Toledo.
Newcomer
Dino Bonetta went 2-0 to lead the way for the Titans, while
Luka Soskic,
Yevhen Sirous and
Gvidas Motuzas each picked up a win as well for Detroit Mercy. The big weekend for Bonetta and Sirous led to the pair earning All-Tournament honors at the conclusion of the invite.
Bonetta started the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Virgili Blanco from Youngstown State, before defeating Tyler Gargas from Toledo, 7-5 and 6-3.
Soskic earned a hard-fought win over Vince Anzalone from Toledo, outlasting the Rocket in three sets – 6-7, 7-6 and 10-8.
Sirous added a second three-set win for Detroit Mercy, downing Reid Teatsorth of Toledo, 7-6, 6-3 and 10-6.
Motuzas added the final singles win of the day for the Titans with a 7-6, 6-2 decision over Luke Purser from YSU.
The Titans went 1-2 in doubles on day two, with
Adam Zychowicz and
Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez teaming up for a grueling, come-from-behind victory over Dashan and Gran from YSU – 5-7, 6-0 and 16-14.
