The UDM women's track and field team scored seven personal records as the Titans defeated Valparaiso, 91-34, at the Mike Lints Alumni Open in Grand Valley. While the event was scored a dual meet between the two programs, a normal open competition did take place.

Senior Tiffany James (Westland, MI / Wayne Memorial) led the way with two top five finishes. James took home second in the 60-meters in 7.87 and fourth in the 200m in 26.04. James then joined sophomore Sequoyia Calhoun (Belleville, MI / Belleville), junior Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH / Zanesville) and senior Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods, MI / Grosse Pointe North) on the first place 4x400-meter relay that posted a time of 4:05.36.

“Good marks for Tiffany to really get her senior season going,” said head coach Guy Murray.

Calhoun went on to earn a personal record with a run of 26.77 in the 200m, where she placed 11th, as well as becoming just the ninth Titan to run under a minute in the 400m, finishing the race second In 59.90.

Miller claimed second in the 600m with a time of 1:40.12, which now stands as the 10th best run in Titan history. Senior Terricita Thomas (Maple Heights, OH / Maple Heights) finished third in the mile with a new career indoor time of 5:30.42, while sophomore Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI / Monroe) was third in the 3000m with a personal record 11:00.39 run. Freshman Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI / Caledonia) also had a fine showing in the 3000m taking fifth in 11:10.49.

Junior Chantel Henry (Tecumseh, ON / St. Anne's) was 12th in the 60-meter hurdles finals in 10:21, after garnering a personal record in the preliminaries with a time of 9.96. Freshman Kiana Sledge (Dearborn, MI / Robichaud) earned a PR with a run of 28.14 in the 200m, good for 34th place, while rookie Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA / Burrell) took fifth in the long jump with a personal best 5.09m/16'8.5" mark.

“Overall, it was a very good day for us,” said Murray. “As a group, we are competing as well as we have this early in the year, which is a great sign for us.”

The Titans will have a week off before their next event when Detroit crosses the border into London, Ontario to run in the Don Wright Team Challenge, held on Saturday, Jan. 24.
