The Titan women's tennis team got 2009 started in winning fashion when the squad posted a 4-3 home triumph over visiting IPFW on Sunday at Franklin Athletic Club.
Detroit opened up the evening by taking two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, then held on in singles by taking three of the first four matches contested (all in straight sets) to clinch the overall match victory. After the final outcome had been decided, IPFW scored three-set victories in the remaining contests for the 4-3 eventual outcome.
Leading the way for the red, white and blue were
Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary 21) and
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden / Katrinelunds Gymnasiet), who teamed for an 8-4 win at #3 doubles. They each also posted singles victories, Flankova by way of her 6-0, 6-4 success over the Mastodons' Sachi Janek at the #3 slot, and Sjoberg-Sundstrom who took care of IPFW's Alex Forsyth 6-1, 7-5 at the #5 position. Senior
Zeljka Minic (Zagreb, Croatia / Sport) also posted a convincing singles win 6-3, 6-3 at the #2 spot for UDM.
“I think any time you get a win in your first dual match, it builds a team's confidence, especially against an opponent (IPFW) who really battled us tonight," said coach Daron Montgomery. "The crowd was great at Franklin and really helped motivate our team to find a way to win.”
Next up on the schedule is another home contest on January 30 when the team hosts Toledo at 8:00 p.m. at Franklin Athletic Club.
