SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/20/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team's rally came up just short as the Titans fell to Wright State, 5-2, in the regular season finale on Saturday night from Franklin Athletic Club.

The loss put the Titans' playoff hopes in jeopardy, as NKU and Youngstown State moved into a three-way tie with the Titans for sixth. But Titan victories over the Norse and Penguins give Detroit Mercy the clear tiebreaker for the final spot in the tournament.

The Titans will open up Horizon League postseason action in the quarterfinals against No. 3 Oakland on Friday at 3 p.m. from Schwartz Tennis Center on the campus of Purdue University.

Match Summary
The visiting Raiders jumped ahead early on, seizing the doubles point with wins on the top two courts for a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Jasmine Apawti was dominant on the top line of singles and leveled the match at 1-1 with wins of 6-3 and 6-1 at No. 1.

Sara Mitrakovic gave the Titans a 2-1 lead with sharp wins of 6-2 and 6-2 from No. 6 singles.

Wright State knotted the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 4, then took the lead with a win at No. 5.

Needing the final two points, Iris Thioux and Chelsea Apawti each bounced back from losses in the opening set, with wins in the second.

Apawti avenged a 2-6 loss in the opening frame with a 6-2 win in the second. She jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the third, but Madison Riley stormed back to earn the win and seal the victory for Wright State.

Thioux dropped a nail-biter in the first frame, 6-7, before roaring back into it with a 6-2 win in the second. As momentum surged the Raiders' way, Thioux was tripped up in the third and Wright State clinched the 5-2 win.
