TEMPE, Ariz. (7/19/19) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team earned 2019 All-Academic Team honors, with four Titans named Scholar-Athletes, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Thursday.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above. During the 2018-19 academic year, the Titans excelled in the classroom with a 3.569 team GPA. It is the third straight year the Titans were honored by the ITA and eighth overall team award since 2006.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
Four Titans received ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction –
Marie Maitrot,
Iris Thioux,
Sophie Torcello and
Pauline Van Herck.
The Titans are one of eight Horizon League schools to earn the All-Academic Team distinction.
In all, 940 teams and thousands of student-athletes across all five divisions of men's and women's collegiate tennis were honored by the ITA.
