Behind two top 50 harriers, the Detroit women's cross country team took home a 10th-place finish on a muddy and wet course at the Annual Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday in Grand Rapids.
“It was a true test of cross country, wet and muddy,” said head coach
Guy Murray. “We did a very good job with our top five getting three under 20 despite the conditions.”
Freshman
Alexandria Vintevoghel (Casco, MI/Marine City) was the first Titan in crossing the finish line in a season best time of 19:19 for 46th place.
“Alexandria is what we hoped for, a true cross country runner,” said Murray. “She looks very comfortable getting out hard and competing well in tough conditions.”
Senior
Beata Gorzynska (Ilawa, Poland/Mazurski of Olsztynie) was 48th in 19:23, while sophomore
Stephanie Rossman (Caledonia, MI/Caledonia) posted a season-best 19:49 for 64th, getting under 20 for the second-straight week.
“Rossman is another cross country runner by trade and she had a great run in front of the hometown crowd,” added Murray.
Junior
Kristie Ferrans (Carleton, MI/Monroe) earned 87th in 20:20, while freshman
Katrina Oberski (Clyde, MI/Port Huron) came in 98th place with a run of 20:31.
Four other Titans competed in the event, all getting under 22 in the conditions, led by senior
Jennifer DeFauw's (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) 101st-palce effort in 20:35. Freshmen
Sarah Martinez (Grand Blanc, MI/Flint Powers) and
Katie Weishaar (Plymouth, MI/Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard) tied for 127th in 21:17, while sophomore
Kristina Arko (Euclid, OH/Euclid) closed out the squad with a 21:47 for 129th.
The Titans will have one more race remaining before hosting the conference championships as Detroit will make the short trip into Ohio next Saturday, Oct. 17, to run in the Bowling Green Falcon Invitational.
